Sheet vinyl: affordable style, ultra-function
Someone recently referred to her gorgeous sheet vinyl floors as being “plain old vinyl.” There was nothing plain about this floor, what with the intricate patterns, bold colors, and high performance.

Is sheet vinyl the same as luxury vinyl?
No, but if you walk into a flooring store, you will see that it’s just as stylish. There are hundreds of colors, patterns, and designs from which to choose.
Luxury vinyl is a newer version of the standard one, being thicker, a little more rigid and completely impervious to water. It can also be cut into planks or tiles.
Although highly water-resistant, some water can be absorbed by sheet vinyl. It is sometimes even referred to as “resilient,” since it falls under the category of floorings that are flexible and have some bounce.

Easy installation
Sheet vinyl is DIY-friendly, which only adds to the affordability. It is available in tile form, but it’s mostly sold in 6 or 12-foot rolls. The rolls mean it has very few seams and that makes it faster, less complicated, inexpensive, and easier to install.
Other benefits include
- Easy care. Sweep often so dirt does not embed. Damp-mop periodically with a manufacturer-approved cleaner
- Durability. Both vinyl sheets and tiles have a clear top wear layer that protects the floors but, like anything, it depends on quality. Do not fall for those bargain-basement prices or corners will be cut, resulting in tearing and ripping. Keep in mind that it cannot be refinished, only replaced
- Ultra-water resistance. When sheet vinyl is installed correctly, it becomes almost water impervious, making it especially appropriate for the kitchen, bath, laundry, or mudroom.
